Sleeve gastrectomy reduces the size of the stomach and can change appetite signals. It is a major, irreversible operation—not a shortcut—and works best as part of long-term clinical, nutritional and behavioural care.

During sleeve gastrectomy, part of the stomach is removed to create a narrower, sleeve-shaped stomach. This usually means smaller portions and may reduce hunger for many patients.

Your recommendation should never be based on BMI alone. Reflux, eating patterns, previous abdominal surgery, medicines, mental wellbeing and your ability to commit to follow-up all matter.

The operation is only one stage of treatment. Protein intake, hydration, prescribed supplements, gradual activity and regular blood tests are central to recovery and long-term health.

Clinical first

Website information is general. Your own suitability, risks, preparation and recovery plan must be confirmed in a personal clinical assessment with Dr Kenan Afilitak and the care team.

02How it works

What the treatment changes—and what it does not.

01

A smaller, sleeve-shaped stomach

During sleeve gastrectomy, a large part of the stomach is removed and the remaining stomach is formed into a narrow sleeve. The route of the intestine is not changed.

02

Portion and appetite effects

A smaller stomach usually limits meal size and the procedure may influence appetite signals. Results differ between patients and still depend on long-term eating, activity and follow-up.

03

A permanent decision

The removed stomach cannot be restored. Reflux, previous surgery, eating patterns and metabolic health therefore need to be considered before sleeve surgery is recommended.

Useful questions for your consultation.

08Detailed answers

Understand before you decide.

A responsible assessment makes room for uncertainty, alternatives and every question you need to ask.

01How do I know whether a sleeve is right for me?

A multidisciplinary assessment is the safest starting point. BMI is important, but reflux, metabolic health, previous treatment, eating behaviour and your preferences can change the recommendation.

02Is gastric sleeve surgery reversible?

No. The removed part of the stomach cannot be restored. That is why informed consent and a clear understanding of alternatives are essential.

03Will I need vitamins after surgery?

Supplement needs are personalised, but long-term vitamin and mineral support and regular blood tests are a normal part of bariatric aftercare.

04How long will I stay in Istanbul after a gastric sleeve?

Your exact stay is set after assessment and depends on your hospital recovery, travel fitness and clinical plan. Do not book inflexible travel until your dates are confirmed.

05Can reflux become worse after sleeve surgery?

Yes. New or worsening reflux is a recognised consideration after sleeve gastrectomy. Existing symptoms should be discussed before choosing a procedure.

06When can I return to work?

This varies with recovery and the physical demands of your job. Your surgeon should give individual advice and confirm when lifting, driving and work are appropriate.
